When I Am Old With You

When I am old with you,
We will find a flat, grassy spot
Under a shady maple and we will spread out a blanket,
Where we can lean into the years together and close our eyes,
In reminiscence.

The reassurance of your touch,
Your arms wrap mine.
We hold tight.
Hold tight to the past
For a moment,
Then slowly,
Carefully together
We loosen the past's grip on us.
We let go of fear and regret.
Sadness makes way for hopefulness.
Hope for the future.
Our future together.

I am open to suggestions. This is in response to a Mentor text I used in my class.

  1. I love this! What a great idea for a prompt and thanks for sharing this with me this morning. It was great to hear it read. Maybe you can read it in class on Monday!

  2. The beginning is perfectly powerful!
After the line, "We hold tight.
    Hold tight to the past
    For a moment,"
I'm wondering if a line of images from the past may give the reader a deeper glimpse into this relationship...
I always love reading your writing, it has such a wonderful cadence about it
    Thanks for sharing!

  3. Linda....experiencing this class with you has been a joy. I am glad that we took the ride, aren't you?! Angie thanks for the feedback....I will play around with the idea of inserting some images........it is fun to try various options.

  4. Barbara,
It works! Although I would agree with Toni about adding some images form the past.
I envy the way words just seem to flow from your pen. You have a gift and write with such depth, it causes the reader to ponder and reflect on your words long after hearing them.

  5. Thank you Kelly....not sure if I will get a chance to play around with it before class, but........I will keep your suggestions in mind. I don't have an audience aside from my classmates! Perhaps the blog will remain for us to share.
